I even hear the mountains
the way they laugh
up and down their blue sides
and down in the water
the fish cry
and the water
is their tears.
I listen to the water
on nights I drink away
and the sadness becomes so great
I hear it in my clock
it becomes knobs upon my dresser
it becomes paper on the floor
it becomes a shoehorn
a laundry ticket
it becomes
cigarette smoke
climbing a chapel of dark vines. . .
it matters little
very little love is not so bad
or very little life
what counts
is waiting on walls
I was born for this
I was born to hustle roses down the avenues of the dead.

Rowan turns 6

My pal Rowan turned 6 this week! I can't even believe it. She and her family are coming to visit today so her Mom can share a table with Wendy and me at the Avenue for the Arts Market. Here's a little drawing I made for her birthday!.

GR Folks, come on down to Division Ave in the Heartside district tonight for artist booths, live bands, and delicious food. It's free! (unless you buy something).

I am completely hysterical. I opened my cupboard and there is a dead mouse. I have no idea where else to post this, but I'm practically in tears. I'm hoping there's someone really close in East Boston who needs $10 and has a super strong stomache. It's all I can offer and I can't do it myself. All you'd need to do is pick it up (trap and all) in a plastic bag and put it in the trash and tie that bag up. I can do the rest.

Ack ack ack...please get this dead mouse out of my house! I need this done by 3:30.

Location: East Boston
it's NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interests
Compensation: $10 one time.

7/10/09 10:07 pm - [info]tvarness posting in [info]davis_square - Daves Fresh Pasta

I love the joint, but a while ago I noticed they no longer weighed their ravioli when I ordered some.  Curious I went home and weighed by 3 pounds and found I had 2lb 10oz - which came out to about 6 ravioli short of 3 lbs.

This isn't the biggest deal in the world but I was a little annoyed.  Today I stopped by and put in an order, as the woman behind the counter went straight from the fridge to the box I asked her if she would weigh it first.  She balked saying they know how many ravioli are in a typical order.  I explained they were wrong on my last visit, and I'd like it if she would weigh the order (since they sell by pound not by number).

So she weighed the order and surprise - she was short.  She didn't seem surprised, I was expecting something like "Huh, look at that the assumption I've been using for days / weeks / months has been wrong.  Wow thanks for pointing that out to me - boy I feel bad I've been overcharging everyone who comes in here."  Well OK obviously I'm exaggerating, but I was expecting some kind of reaction and apology.

Anyway just a tip for others who buy larger orders from Daves to have them actually weigh it.

7/10/09 07:40 pm - [info]tempobay posting in [info]b0st0n - Hot Sauce

Anybody know of any good supplies of hot sauce in the Boston area? I know that Christina's Spice Store in Inman has a decent selection, but I was hoping for a little more selection. I was thinking maybe Quincy Market may have a kiosk or something, but I don't fancy biking all the way there for overpriced crap (and dealing with all the tourists) if that's all they have. I've tried Shaw's but the best they have is Cholula, and like half an aisle of Frank's Red Hot. (ugh)

Google also turned up Polcari's Coffee in the North End, but their website doesn't say that they sell hot sauce, and Yelp only had a brief mention. Anybody tried that place?

Thanks!

1. What is your favorite vegetable?
2. What is your favorite salad dressing, sauce, gravy, or condiment?
3. What is your favorite culture's food (American, Chinese, Creole, Indian, Italian, Mexican, Soul Food, Southern U.S., etc.)?
4. What is your favorite beverage?
5. What is your favorite food?

1. I like broccoli a lot. Green beans when they're in season, but we eat more broccoli.

2. Caesar dressing is usually what I use on salads. I don't eat a lot of gravy outside of Thanksgiving.

3. I like Mexican food best these days, or more specifically, Tex-Mex.

4. Water. Boring, but that's pretty much all I drink. Occasionally I treat myself to a gallon of Newman's Own Lemon-Aided Ice Tea, but those are fewer and further between these days.

5. Ellen makes a chicken pot pie that I love, but if pressed, her pork chops are my favorites.

Many new things next week! Do not die this weekend, that is your only instruction.

After a while you learn
the subtle difference between
holding a hand and chaining a soul
and you learn
that love doesn't mean leaning
and company doesn't always mean security.
And you begin to learn
that kisses aren't contracts
and presents aren't promises
and you begin to accept your defeats
with your head up and your eyes ahead
with the grace of woman,
not the grief of a child
and you learn
to build all your roads on today
because tomorrow's ground is
too uncertain for plans
and futures have a way of falling down
in mid-flight.
After a while you learn
that even sunshine burns
if you get too much
so you plant your own garden
and decorate your own soul
instead of waiting for someone
to bring you flowers.
And you learn that you really can endure
you really are strong
you really do have worth
and you learn
and you learn
with every goodbye, you learn...

This is, not surprisingly, screwing up traffic. Highland itself is backed up to Willow. Dunno how Russell is doing.

7/10/09 04:29 pm - [info]manderleys posting in [info]b0st0n - Boston Harbor Cruises

My grandmother (age 81) really wants to go on a local cruise for an evening this summer. I looked online and found the sunset cruises and the aquarium's whale watch sunset cruises to be the most promising. Anyone ever been on one? I haven't been on a whale watch in years and because I went with my school I don't really remember any of the planning aspect of it. If we go, I'd probably buy the tickets online in advance.

I'm just looking for any general input on those two events or suggestions for other boat trips. The biggest issue with my grandmother is she has difficult walking long distances or standing for a long period of time, so I want something relaxed enough that she can mostly sit and enjoy the view. Also, we'd probably take the quincy or hull ferry into long wharf to board and depart from whatever we do, so the event has to be flexible enough to work with those boat schedules (I prefer something in the evening).

www.harborexpress.com is the website I've been checking out. Thanks everyone!

7/10/09 04:06 pm - [info]theclefe posting in [info]b0st0n - Cash Money

Anyone looking to make some money this Sunday? We need two softball scorekeepers for a series of games this Sunday. Games run from 8:30am to 4pm and the fields are a short walk from the Red Line in Cambridge and Boston. You must be able to keep baseball statistics. You can make about $90 for sitting out in the sun and watching a few ballgames. If you interested, email me at clefe at hotmail dot comm. With 10 percent unemployment, there has got to be some takers, right?
