What a nice surprise to discover the autobiographical comics of David Libens. His Badaboum Twist boasts an enviable spontaneity and looseness.

A Cautionary Tale
There are probably a few hundred of you that don't know what a "Bang Bus" is, and are curious. Don't Google it or anything. The Bang Bus is a pornography where some adult men in a van pay a "random lady" to have actual, real sex with them in the van while the videotape it, then they pretend to drop her off in the middle of nowhere. And people enjoy it. There's a lot wrong here.

If you're looking to order something for Christmas outside the USA at TopatoCo, time is almost out! The deadline for First Class International-type shipping has passed and you gotta get Priority or Express shipping now for it to get there in time. USA, you're all still relatively safe until we say otherwise. U-S-A!

Happy birthday Brother Danny!

An interesting review of Crumb's Genesis by Robert Alter, (The fellow who did the translation that Crumb relied heavily on for his interpretation.)

Alter is an interesting guy in his own right, I recommend any interviews or lectures you might find with or by him on the interwebs. He sort of reminds one that the english versions of the bible are largely politically motivated, and/or just lousy.

I appreciate that the flaws he points out, are flaws that he seems to think are manifest in Crumbs style of comics, and not flaws in comics as an art form.

Anyway, food for thought.

Marie Howe
The Promise

In the dream I had when he came back not sick
but whole, and wearing his winter coat,

he looked at me as though he couldn't speak, as if
there were a law against it, a membrane he couldn't break.

His silence was what he could not
not do, like our breathing in this world, like our living,

as we do, in time.
And I told him: I'm reading all this Buddhist stuff,

and listen, we don't die when we die. Death is an event,
a threshold we pass through. We go on and on

and into light forever.
And he looked down, and then back up at me. It was the look we'd pass

across the kitchen table when Dad was drunk again and dangerous,
the level look that wants to tell you something,
in a crowded room, something important, and can't.

12/2/09 05:26 pm - [info]redheadedmuse posting in [info]davis_square - Wainwright Bank Stole My Grocery Money

After almost 10 years of doing business with Wainwright, I finally jumped ship this week after they charged me almost $100 in overdraft fees - even though my statement shows no overdraft at all.

As I said in my open letter to them, this is not just my issue. Banks are poised to rake in over $38 billion in overdraft fees this year, and Congress has just approved new regulations making the kind of sneaky accounting and overdraft "protection" racket Wainwright is using illegal. Those regulations haven't gone into effect yet, but I would have hoped our neighborhood "progressive" bank would be ahead of the curve in this important social justice issue.

I'm disappointed that a local bank that advertises itself as "banking on values" would treat its customers this way. It's a deceptive and predatory practice that traps financially marginalized people in a painful cycle of debt they can't get out of. Shame on you, Wainwright.

2009-11-22-cover

After publishing two volumes of his Chickenhare title as black and white graphic novels with Dark Horse Comics, Chris Grine turns the focus of its third volume to the Internet. Chickenhare Vol. 3: Fish & Grymps has debuted as a full-colour webcomic, free to all.

I enjoyed the first Chickenhare book, though haven’t read its immediate sequel. Chris has created a world of odd misfit animals unlike any other, and I’m looking forward to following this latest chapter online.

If you’re unaquainted with Chickenhare, you may know Chris Grines from his work at Shoebox, specifically his series of odd robots for their blog,165 Bots With Stuff.

12/2/09 08:52 am - [info]calamityjon - #4: The Book of Genesis Illustrated by Robert Crumb

The Book of Genesis Illustrated by Robert Crumb
W.W.Norton & Company (Robert Crumb) 2009

Few living cartoonists have enjoyed a professional career as long and productive as Robert Crumb, so it's rewarding that he still produces exciting new work - particularly given the source material.

Crumb's Book of Genesis is the result of a four-year labor, a painstakingly literal and brutally physical representation of the fifty chapters of the first book of the Old Testament. He resisted the temptation to make modifications to the text, but his personal interpretation is boldly expressed in every panel; the players of Crumb's Patriarchal cycles are presented with warts intact. The human flesh is grimy, hairy, filthy with gore and dirt, the shades erected against the desert sun heavy with black ink.

His Biblical legends are heavy with humanity, particularly his YHWH, who rests weightily with his back against the trees in the Garden of Eden, or turns to speak over a broad shoulder - he hefts the halo of his thick, matted hair and beard with the physical power of Atlas holding the heavens - this is a God who maintains a real relationship with his wards. Crumb has given true physical merit to these characters without changing so much as a punctuation mark in the source material - there are no whitewashed prophets in cleansing halos here, and between that and Crumb's depiction of Biblical women in the typical Crumb fashion, it's bound to offend some. This is a good thing, because it speaks well of the emotional weight of Crumb's rendition. Possibly my favorite of his entire body of work to date...
